On July 6, more than 800 scholars, artists and intellectuals from more than 45 countries signed a declaration that calls for the dismantling of the apartheid regime and the establishment of a democratic constitution that upholds equal rights for all in Historical Palestine. The declaration, known as the ‘Declaration on the Suppression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid in Historic Palestine’, reiterates the conclusion of Adalah, B’Tselem, Human Rights Watch and UN ESCWA (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia) that Israel is guilty of committing the crime of apartheid, both in its own territory and the oPt. The signatories concluded with a demand for international governments to end their complicity with apartheid, and also called on the International Criminal Court (ICC) to launch a formal investigation of Israeli political leaders and security personnel guilty of perpetuating the crime of apartheid.
The signatories include various distinguished figures, including Nobel Peace Prize laureates (Adolfo Pérez Esquivel and Mairead Maguire), academics with legal expertise (Monique Chemillier-Gendreau and Richard Falk), scholars (Étienne Balibar, Hagit Borer, Ivar Ekeland, Suad Joseph, Jacques Rancière, Roshdi Rashed, Gayatri Spivak and the health researcher Sir Iain Chalmers), musicians (Brian Eno and Roger Waters) and authors like Ahdaf Soueif. They also include Sir Richard Jolly, the former Assistant Secretary-General of the UN; Ronnie Kasrils, the South African politician and veteran anti-apartheid leader and Joan Russow, the Canadian peace activist and former leader of Canada’s Green Party.
