Israeli police inflicted more than 20 violations on Palestinians in Israel and occupied East Jerusalem in the period 9 May – 12 June 2021, including mass arrests and the use of unlawful force, torture and other forms of ill-treatment. These activities, as part of a ‘crackdown’ in the aftermath of the recent upsurge of violence in Israel and the Gaza Strip, resulted in hundreds of Palestinian injuries and the death of a 17-year-old Palestinian boy. The researchers, who drew on interviews with 11 witnesses, 45 videos and material uploaded to digital media, provided clear evidence that the Israeli government, despite being fully aware of the likelihood of violent attacks on Palestinian citizens, failed to act. It also suggested this violence was systemic.
Molly Malekar, the director of Amnesty Israel, said: “The fact that Jewish citizens of Israel, including prominent figures, have been allowed to openly incite violence against Palestinians without being held accountable highlights the extent of institutionalized discrimination faced by Palestinians and the urgent need for protection.”
